Documenting Yes is a new project from National Collective where photographers are invited to submit photo sets that document and promote a positive Yes campaign for Scottish independence.
After photographing the March & Rally for Independence in Edinburgh back in September I had a strong desire to photograph more Yes campaign events. I realised that a concise photo documentary of the Yes campaign could be incredibly valuable. Not just for the Yes campaign itself but for its historic value. I then got myself down to Edinburgh and Glasgow for the first of a series of Yes events. Soon after those I found myself in Perth covering the Yes Scotland presence at the 2012 SNP Conference. I needed a place to publish these images and decided a blog would likely be the best way and of course I needed to come up with a title for the blog. A couple of months back I mentioned the idea to Ross Colquhoun, the Director of National Collective, and he came up with ‘Documenting Yes’. An ideal title as it described very simply what I was doing.
There was a problem however. I realised that unless I was employed full-time to fulfill this project it was going to be very difficult to photograph all the events around Scotland that I wanted to go to. That’s where the photo submissions comes in. I decided to open up the project to anyone who was out there documenting the Yes Campaign. This way I will hopefully be able to showcase the work of Scottish photographers, build a more detailed photo reportage of the Yes campaign and promote the Yes vote at the same time.
It’s early days and there is no way to know how the project will evolve but as long as it’s open, creative and positive I think it will be a good addition to the campaign.
